June 26, 2011 - Middle Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Keys Animal Hospital Dr. Dunn and Staff: June 23, 2011 – Dr. Mike animal hospital, veterinary hospital, veterinary, florida keysDunn has a great business and high quality services. We conducted this interview at the hospital, one of the examining rooms. 305-743-6250. Mon – Fri 8 - 5; Wed 8 - 8; Sat 8 - 12.

Business success is marked by community and family. The Dunns’ have children with Ella 4, Jack 2, and daughter yet to be born with a not- yet firm name of Violet. The new addition will be born at the Lower Keys Medcial Center. I like the name, but I know how a child’s name can be difficult to settle. My youngest son was not named for days after his birth.

    LOWER KEYS MEDICAL CENTER
    5900 COLLEGE ROAD
    KEY WEST, FL 33040
    (305) 294-5531
Type of Hospital: Acute Care Hospitals
    Provides Emergency Services: Yes

Keys Animal Hospital recent history starts when Dr. Dunn buys into business from Dr. Robert DeField. Dr. Dunn was a partner 2000 and then owner 2008. Both DeField and Van Buren still practice their craft at the hospital.

Dr. Dunn’s focus is owners and pets that are always considered family. That tradition continues. He likes Marathon’s small-town community that treats everyone as family taking care of one another. The most important business concept is one-on-one basics treating people and pets as family.

The Keys Animal Hospital staff is experienced and well qualified. They are Lewis, Bell, Cox, Deming, Romeo, Morris, Hooper, and Martyshyna [Russian]. Yes, Martyshyna is eight letters. There ought to be a rule that limits last names to seven letters or less like Shaffer. I digress, sorry.

This family-owned business offers a long list of high quality services. Cutting-edge technologies like stem cell repair, laparoscopic surgery, oncology, MRI, CT, orthopedic surgery, low-level cold therapy, and more. The costs to customers are minimized through these technologies and new ones to come. This kind of service brings people and pets coming back.

Dr. Dunn is always considering improvements. He wants to modernize equipment on ongoing basis, continued staff triage training, and improving business US1 frontage with new foliage and so on. Cross training staff is essential for high quality services and staff retention.

Keys Animal Hospital is based on a minimalist approach that has worked well the last 37 years. I know from personal experience that you want to wait 24-hours before considering critical life and death decisions.

This business specializes in providing the right information and advice. I still mourn my black cat Ebony who died last year. I know that I will never get over that loss. Consider then how the doctors and staff feel in a situation that must repeat itself almost daily. They lose beloved animals every day.

Owner education is important. Catch it early. Keys Animal Hospital provides excellent preventive therapies, medications, and new technologies.

Dr. Dunn as well as others in our Marathon community put together Safe Harbor Animal Rescue of the Keys [SHARK] to save our animal shelter.

They operate the shelter as adjunct to our community values. I know that I loved visiting the cat sanctuary. I look forward to coming back to enjoy that part of the animal shelter.

Cat and kitten adoptions are currently held in Dunn’s office and Marathon’s animal shelter. The Forgotten Felines organization, among other like organizations in the community, is involved to take our shelter back to the way it was and better. So volunteers, dog walkers, people socializing cats, and so on we are back in business.

And, most importantly, only animals that pose a danger to staff and people or very sick ones are considered for euthanization. That is still a case-by-case determination that is taken very seriously. SHARK hit a homerun against the previous temporary caretakers when SHARK did NOT put out a press release explaining its no-kill policy. Never ceases to amaze me how public relations are not considered in situations of this sort.

I am due to speak at the next Forgotten Felines meeting July 25th, 6 pm, at the Martin Luther King Church behind the NAPA store. I propose as discussed with Dr. Dunn that SHARK, our community, and other vet offices put together a catastrophe fund. No one should be put in a position of choosing dollars over continued health care. Of course, this fund is not limitless and SHARK should manager such a program based on policy set by all the players including community.

Keys Animal Hospital is not just another business. In our community, they are our friends and family in caring for our beloved pets.

All Keys Glass can do about anything encompassing glass. I found the all glass walk-in showers very nice. There is something tropical about a shower like that. There appears to be more open area as well in case you should want to shower with other people. Okay, spouse. Goodness.

Firefighters Local 4396 Union is Marathon's firefighters and paramedics. Monroe County Teacher's Union could learn a lot from Local 4396 regarding press releases about all the good stuff. Marathon's besieged city staffers could learn to finally stand up for themselves by forming their own union. The Rock Coalition is pro-union as well as other similar communities. Request a ride-along. Now that is a lot of fun, and you even get to learn cool stuff.

July 2, 2011 - Middle Keys - Forgotten Felines: Pictures of adoptable cats (and dog) - publisher: included the whole letter, because it offers important information as well. Since the Journal is a cat only publication, I want to know how that dog got in here?

Hi: Would be possible to post the attached pictures in your journal? I am not sure if you would be able to do this every week and if so, I can always send you other adoptable cats if you just let me know the number of pics you can post. The cats I have picked today are the ones that have been with Forgotten Felines for a long time and desperately need a home. We also have a dog (Lola) we are looking for a good home for. She is my dog I adopted from a home that neglected her and starved her. They had 4 cats and told me that she is great with cats. However, when I took her home she started to charge at our cats and after 1.5 years of going through training, advices etc. we were not able to break her habit not to attack cats. She is an awesome dog otherwise and if we can find a home for her we will donate the re-homing free to Forgotten Felines.

    Thanks bunches :)

    1.Lea
Lea is a spunky little black girl with lots of love to give. She is approximately 1.5 years old but due to her tiny stature looks like she is less than 1 year old. Lea has part Burmese in her and loves to play the boss when around other cats. She came to Forgotten Felines when she was about 4 months old and has been moved around between foster homes and cages ever since and we think she finally deserves a furr-ever home. If you are looking for a kitty with lots of personality and that will always stay small, you will love our little Lea. Lea is spayed, up-to-date with her vaccinations and rabies and her adoption fee is $30.

    2. Lucy
Lucy and her 2 siblings, Ethel and Fred, were adopted from Forgotten Felines when they were kittens. Their owner always worried what would happen to the siblings if something happens to him since he always wanted the group to stay together. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago their owner passed away unexpectedly and now Lucy and her siblings are looking for a home. They are about 4 years old, love treats, to chase after aluminum balls and to give all their love and attention to their owner. The siblings are spayed/neutered, up-to-date with their vaccinations and rabies and their adoption fee is $50.

    3. Royal
Royal is a handsome 3 years old gray tabby. His previous owner kept him outside all the time and when he realized that neighbors were feeding Royal and giving him the attention he so wanted he decided to no longer care for him. One of our Forgotten Felines volunteer took him in even if she already had several fosters to give him a temporary home until a permanent home can be found for him. Royal's foster says that he is one of the sweetest cats she has ever been around with, enjoys being around other cats and to shower you with love. Royal is neutered and up-to-date with his vaccinations and rabies. His adoption fee is $30.

    4. Lola
Lola is a beautiful long-haired German Shepherd girl and 6.5 years old. She is full of energy, enjoys long walks and rides in the car and loves people especially cats. Lola gets along great with other dogs but she cannot be around cats. Due to her long fur she needs grooming regularly but loves to get brushed and to get a bath here and there. Lola also loves to cuddle up on the couch or bed with you and acts like a big teddy bear. She would make a great dog for a family with kids or for someone who is looking for a companion. Lola is spayed and up-to-date with her vaccinations and rabies. We do a home/reference check and her re-homing fee is $30.

Forgotten Felines has many wonderful felines available for adoption in all ages, coloring and personalities. All cats and kittens are spayed/neutered and up-to-date with vaccinations and rabies. Please, visit us on Petfinder under "Forgotten Felines - Marathon, FL" to see more pictures of our adoptable cats or email keysforgottenfelines@Live.com

    5. Nemo the black cat [right photo]: it appears there is not a description for Nemo, but a picture is worth a thousand words. Adoption fee: priceless...

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Article for Forgotten Felines Column

Kitten season is over, however, we still receive unwanted, owner-surrendered and stray cats and kittens. It seems like that this year's kitten season was the worse one we have ever had or at least not had for a very long time.

Forgotten Felines does not have a shelter and therefore, relies on foster homes and volunteers. We are still struggling to find foster homes and our current foster homes are at their max with the numbers of felines they currently foster. It seems like that people don't realize that a cat can become pregnant as early as 6 months of age when she is still a kitten herself. She can become pregnant up to three times per year with an average of 4-10 kittens per litter.

A female cat and her offspring can yield 420,000 felines in only 7 years! Plus, due to Florida's warm weather all year round, cats in Florida can become pregnant all year round. It is a never ending story.

We have a wonderful TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) program in place and offer low cost felines spay/neuter. However, to run these programs we constantly need trappers, donations and foster homes. All of our foster homes will be provided with everything they need such as food, toys, litterbox & litter, vet care etc. Our fosters in return give their foster cats all the TLC they deserve. No foster experience is necessary since we provide training.

Forgotten Felines does not have any paid staff and therefore, relies on volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers and have many wonderful volunteer opportunities available that will fit your schedule and availability. If you are a night owl you might be interested in volunteering as a trapper and even if you have never trapped before, we will show you how. If you love to bargain shop, you definitely need to check out our Purr-Fect Thrift Store located across the City Park in Marathon. All sales proceeds go to Forgotten Felines to help with expenses in regards to our TNR, adoption and foster program as well as providing veterinary care and food. Make sure to tell our wonderful volunteers at the store what a great job they do and to meet our store kitty "Miss Purr-Fect".

We are having our next Forgotten Felines meeting on Monday, July 25, at the Martin Luther Chapel behind NAPA Auto Parts in Marathon and hope you will be able to join us. You will have the opportunity to meet our Forgotten Felines volunteers and foster homes, to find out the latest issues about the Florida Keys felines and opportunities out there to help while joining refreshments and raffle with fun prizes. For more information about Forgotten Felines, our upcoming meeting, volunteer and/or foster opportunities, please email keysforgottenfelines@live.com. Please remember to save a life by spaying/neutering your pet.

    Thank you:)

We usually try to post/focus on cats and older kittens that have been with us for a long time. Kittens get adopted fairly quick and easy and usually, Dr. Dunn and his staff are doing a great job getting the kittens adopted we have at his office. I will have several kitten pictures available next week. It is often hard to get our fosters to provide me with the pictures and bios of their adoptable cats.

We are looking into having a big cat-adoption-thon on either August 5th or 12th at the Purr-Fect Thrift store across the City Park. Forgotten Felines has 15+ kittens and over 40 adults in the system available for adoption. It is getting overwhelming even if we have exposure on Petfinder, Facebook and recently on www.Save-A-Pet.com. We are also trying to redo our website which has not been redone for a very long time and needs a "outfit".

Will talk more about our adoption event at the meeting since I am trying to get several volunteers together able to help out for the day.

Have a Happy 4th of July!

July 3, 2011 - Middle Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Guidance Clinic of the Middle Keys' [GCMK's] A. B. Maloy. I met A. B. Maloy, JD, MPH, at GCMK’s conference room. We sat across the table and had a pleasant and informative discussion of mental healthcare issues facing our community at large. Her official title is Guidance/Care Center [GCC] Area Director that means she covers the county. WestCare has the contract providing for mental healthcare services in Monroe County. A. B. Maloy is part of that contract, but she would be there no matter who holds the contract. She is technically an affiliate with WestCare.

Her home office is located at 1205 Fourth Street, Key West, FL 33040. AB’s telephone number is (305) 292-6843 extension 227. She visits Key Largo and Marathon’s clinics regularly.

I have taken a liberty of using AB, because I forgot her first name. Sorry, that is the result of my short-term memory problems. I don’t think she will mind. Of course, I will get a call if she does.

The very informative website is located at www.gcmk.org.

As usual, mental healthcare services are always short on funding and resources. GCMK does very well despite such problems. There are 24 funding sources including federal grants, state, county, and Key West, the school board, insurance, and client fees. That all sounds good, except that it is never enough.

In these challenging budget times, mental healthcare services are the first to be targeted for cutting expenses. These same entities would not reduce funding for a medical service like an emergency room visit for a broken leg. The fact that a mental healthcare issue is not different from a medical issue like a broken leg escapes our ill-informed and uneducated politicos. There must be attention focused on these issues. Cutting mental healthcare services results in losing $10 for every $1 supposedly saved. You do the math.

It might be you coming to the mental-healthcare emergency room [ER]. Sure would be awful if GCMK cannot afford to take you. You voluntarily try to commit yourself, and a lack of dollars prevents that action.

There are about 145 employees staffing three Guidance/Care Centers in Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West. Filling the open positions is particularly difficult considering the small pool of qualified prospects. We all need to help fill these positions. Someday you will be glad you helped when you ask for help. One way to help is call, email, and/or phone your local politicos involved in funding decisions.

Non-profits have it doubly hard in receiving adequate funding, resources, and qualified personnel. Employee retention is very important in any organization, but primary in mental healthcare organization. There are not enough qualified nurses, doctors, and supporting staff to allow one already in position to leave due to workforce housing, budgeting, and double shift problems. Local governments need to work on those shortfalls even though many elites think there is no problem. Again, every dollar spent on mental health issues saves property taxpayers $10.

On the medical [physical] side of overall healthcare, GCC’s medical director is Joseph O’Lear. Often mental issues go hand-in-hand with medical issues. You cannot treat one without addressing the other.

All this needs funding, resources, and education. GCMK provides a broad set of services from critical care, outpatient programs, and preventative programs. The Guidance Clinics work hard on educating the public and local governments on the value of mental healthcare services. Part of that education is patient privacy, ethical and moral considerations required.

More importantly is the ongoing program to stop the needless and unjustified stigma of mental healthcare services. Even the phrase “psych ward” makes a few miscreants cringe. I use such phrases to de-stigmatize them. One mental healthcare issue most common is depression. How is there a stigma attached to an ER visit for a broken leg or an ER visit for depression? The answer is none whatsoever.

I know. I’ve been there done that. If I get my leg broken, I go to the ER. If I get very depressed, I go to the ER. I have voluntarily committed myself a number of times. It does not stigmatize me. I tell everyone that both my physical and mental healthcare problems are under control, because I seek out those services that know how to treat such issues.

The substance abuse programs are quite successful not necessarily in numbers but saving one life at a time. Keys-to-Recovery is a long-term program that addresses such issues. Nadine Hood is responsible for such services and is well respected from Judge Ruth Becker to the public. I meet people everywhere at stores and parks who have heard about these programs and the indomitable Nadine Hood. I guess you can see who is next to interview in my continuing crusade as a mental healthcare advocate.

Let us consider then mental healthcare versus physical healthcare, depression versus a broken leg. We are talking about the same kind of services. Let us work together then to help our bottom line and ourselves by advocating for adequate healthcare both mental and physical. We are only helping each other, family, and friends, and most importantly ourselves. Think about it.

July 6, 2011 - Middle Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Journal Week in Review. This is so hard to keep up. I snip items from various news sources that get my attention and then opine. I just got to write the opinions. I got to be too busy, I think. Well, after a long wait, here is the latest iteration.

Sally Beuhler passed away recently. She was heavily committed to Marathon’s community. She was an advocate for pets, strays, and ferals. What I remember is Sally calling me in 2003 wanting to help me in my first-run for Marathon City Council. Sally knew many details on how things worked and who was who. Sally Beuler was one of those famous anti-incorporation advocates. Although these advocates are steadily decreasing every year that goes by with the City of Marathon’s existence, she never gave up the fight. Our community has most certainly lost an institution. Life goes on, but remember Sally by adopting a pet.

SHARK has the contract for Marathon’s Animal Shelter and community is welcome back to be part of our shelter. Visit the cat sanctuary. It is quite large with tunnels, runs, and several separate enclosures. If you really want to be popular with the cats, bring treats and catnip.

Jack Black is still rotting in our Marathon jail. Remember the seedy story of Jack being abusive to his disabled daughter in American Legion Post 154. Our constitution regardless of what you think is that Jack is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers. The bartender reporting the offense did the right thing. For those who seem to think that the Legion is at fault, go back and read that sentence about the bartender. I know that the Legion would not have let one incident go without reporting it. Again, how badly the news gets out and festers. Stop making stuff up and pay attention to your life.

Key Largo Vs. Islamorada battles with different wastewater offers. You knew this sorry state of affairs was coming. Two disparate figures were offered with the Islamorada offer an insult. Islamorada rejected Key Largo’s reasonable offer. Islamorada goes oops, and can we talk again? The village manager takes the hit here. Whoever is giving out bad advice should be run out on a rail, or better yet a runaway watercraft.

Monroe County School Teacher’s Union Fowler replaced by Hummell-Gormanin. The 3-day furlough is a slap in the face to classroom teachers and students alike. Is John Dick the only sane member of the Board of Education? So you save like $700,000 to cost the local economy $3,500,000.

Skeeter Board is worse than that Peyton Place TV show back when. The guy-in-charge prospect wants more money, of course. Michael Doyle seems like the real deal, but how will he handle a skeeter board run amuck?

My youngest adult son is here for a two-week vacation along with his best friend. So I will be laying low on the Florida Keys Journal front. I know everyone will miss me, especially Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Advantage Rehab & Fitness is an outstanding wellness center that thrives on community. They treat you like family. Their business hires locals and supports the local economy. Everything is clean, bright, and they manage your rehabilitation and fitness to fit your needs and desires.

July 7, 2011 - FL Keys - Jessica Mintz: Cats for adoption; More adoptable kitties; & Forgotten Felines Column. Hope you had a save 4th Holiday. The kitties did well with all the fireworks going on.

Thank you for posting the pictures of Forgotten Felines adoptable kitties. I believe we will have 2 new kittens at Dr. Dunn's this week. They are adorable tigers and were rescued by a couple who found mama cat with 3 kittens in their backyard. They kept mama and one of the kittens and a neighbor took a kitten as well. So, two are left but I am sure they get adopted fairly quick.

I am planning to have a cat adoption event for Forgotten Felines next month. They never really had an adoption event and I have coordinated such events in the past and it was always a success. Even if we don't adopt as many cats as we want, we most likely will end up with some donations and new volunteers and the opportunity to get the word out about Forgotten Felines.

Attached a few more pics and bios. You can post them whenever you can. Feel free to call me at 305-240-5266 if you have any questions.

"These four beauties were taken to a dog rescue group in Miami after their owner was no longer willing to take care of them and did not want to drop them off at a shelter. One of the dog foster homes took in the cats but due to space can only keep them in her garage. Forgotten Felines was able to enter these felines into their system under the condition that they can continue to stay in their foster home until we can find permanent homes. Even if the foster is located in Miami, transportation to the Florida Keys can be arranged for these cats.

    1. Neene is a beautiful white tabby neutered male and up-to-date with his vaccines. He is 2.5 years old and a big charmer. He loves to come up to you to take a nap in your lap and is a very laid back kitty. He gets along great with other cats especially since he did grow up with his buddies, Kirito, Puchis and Nino.

    2. Puchis is a gorgeous 2 years young black lady with medium-length fur. She is very affectionate and when not busy watching Kirito, Nino and Neene play she loves to cuddle up in a corner and to dream of becoming a beauty queen. If you are looking for a loving and laid back girl, Puchis is the one for you.

    3. Nino is a big orange boy and a Hemingway cat since he has 6 toes. He is a curious big fellow and loves to explore his surroundings to see what is going on. His favorite spot is at the window where he can watch everything that is going on outside. He is great with other cats, neutered and up-to-date with is vaccines.

    4. Kiritto is a sweet 2 years old grey tabby who loves to shower you with love and affection. When not chasing after toys he enjoys a quick nap or laying around watching his buddies play. He has lots of personality and often thinks he is a kitten. He would make a great companion for someone who is looking for a young adult with the playfulness of a kitten. Kiritto is neutered and up-to-date with his shots. "

    Thank you :)
    Jess >^..^<

Some more adult cats in need of homes. The first three kitties belong to Sally Buehler, a long-time Forgotten Felines volunteer, foster home and colony caretaker who passed away due to cancer last months. Her foster cats were split up among other fosters and these three cats were her own babies. It's so sad, we have 10+ cats in our system right now whose owners passed away. You can use my 305-240-5266 as contact number for the kitties.

    1. Brownie is a very sweet and quiet 6 years young tortoiseshell girl who recently lost her owner, a long-time Forgotten Felines volunteer. She would make a perfect companion for someone who is looking for a quiet kitty. Brownie is still trying to get over the death of her owner and we believe that if someone can open her home and heart for her she will be able to cope.

    2. Slick is a playful and curious 6 years young tuxedo boy who often thinks he is a big kitten. When not busy checking out his surroundings to see what is going on in the world he loves to take a nap in either your lap or wherever he feels comfortable at. Slick has a slight skin issue which is nothing major and not contagious to other cats. If you are looking for an adult kitty with the personality of a kitten, you will fall in love with this handsome boy.

    3. Honey is a beautiful longhaired tortoiseshell girl who does not act her 7.5 years of age but more of a 3 years young adult. She has lots of personality and is fine around other cats but we think she would not mind a home where she will be the only kitty.

    4. Saskia is a very sweet 4 years young white/grey girl whose owner passed away. She is a bit overweight but does not have diabetes and is currently on a diet plan. This girl loves to shower you with kisses and affection and to sleep with you on the couch or in the bed.

    Thanks,

July 7, 2011 - Marathon - L. E. Shaffer: the Honorable Mayor Ginger Snead interview at Frank's Grill. Mayor Ginger Snead is a hard councilwoman to interview, because she is always so busy. Here I thought that I was busy. I finally got her to meet me at Frank’s Grill in Town Square Mall July 7, 2011. I was supposed to come by her business Advantage Rehab & Fitness and pick her up to walk to Frank’s Grill. I missed that signal, because I hadn’t thought to do that. Of course, now I can see how that was the common sense thing to do. And, I have training and experience in etiquette, all those state dinners in various countries, you know.

My first question is “What is the most important thing right now?” She answered that she wanted to finish work on various outstanding projects. After that, the Mayor wanted to make the town more attractive to entice more business to Marathon.

I suggested that the city wean itself off the 10% it takes out of capital infrastructure funds to make the annual budget look good politically. She said that would not be easy. I suggested that the city wean itself off those funds 1% every budget year. She seemed receptive to that idea. Of course, Ginger always listens to anyone with valued input.

We talked life cycle management, and the Mayor gets it. We agreed that included finishing the infrastructure projects including the Grassy Key satellite fire station. I applauded her and her follow councilpersons for having the foresight to beginning the long 5 to 10 year arduous process of building a city hall including another satellite fire station at the western end of town.

We discussed what it means when few people show up for a council meeting versus an overflowing crowd exceeding the maximum number of people allowed. Few people probably means nothing controversial is coming up; overflowing crowd likely means something is on the agenda that is causing a big turnout. Usually, you can guess what issue stirs up residents.

In the near future, Ginger and I discussed why all city meetings of any type must be hosted by Fire Station #14 large multipurpose media room. Each meeting must be recorded for playback at scheduled times on the city’s own Comcast channel. Long-term solutions always save a bunch of money down the line.

We talked about the city’s highest risk/liability and the lowest risk/liability. With my long experience at professional risk assessment, I told her the highest risk/liability is city hall in trailers. Most people know this. The lowest risk/liability is, lo and behold, Fire Station #14 built to withstand hurricanes, storm surges, and wind damages. The station ensures that the city is able to respond the second the storm event passes.

We are supposed to have cash reserves to operate the city in an emergency for at least six months. The only problem is that the council is siphoning off those precious funds for a short-term political gain.

Finally, Mayor Snead and I discussed how the city should advocate for lower property taxes from all the other taxing entities. Marathon has the lowest property tax per capita in Florida, and its tax is only about 18% of the total property tax due. The property tax wasters are as follows: Monroe County [general revenue fun, law enforcement, jail, court system, and health services] [35%], the county’s broken school system [37%], water management district [7%], and the biggest waster mosquito control [5%]. I suggested a few well-placed resolutions, actual attendance by councilpersons, and speaking up on the podium would help Marathon’s residents tremendously. Of course, residents should show up en masse as well.

I must confess that with all the feel-good Larry-King type interviews that I do; I do have a tendency of injecting my own bias. I bet you that I am the only newspaper to admit to that.

UPS Store handles about anything concerning shipping, receiving, mail boxes, copying, and, well, you get the idea. I use the shipping side of the business for returns, exchanges, and environmental returns. This business is run by local for locals and hires and spends money locally. They like other family-owned and operated businesses are the backbone of the local economy.

Final Space Shuttle, Free “Dawn’s Early Light” Download, more

I just watched the last launch of the Space Shuttle program, and as someone who grew up at the Cape in the 1960s, I had a tear in my eye. I wrote an article for my Marathon & the Middle Florida Keys Magazine about our 50 years of launching people into space – it can be read on my blog:

    http://www.johnbartus.com/blog.html/50_years_of_americans_in_space/

Additionally, it can be seen as it appeared on pages 14-15 with color photos from NASA at:

In recognition of today’s final flight of Atlantis, as well as all those associated with the space program for the past half-century, my tribute to the Challenger (and Columbia and Apollo 1) astronauts, “Dawn’s Early Light,” will be available as a free download for a limited time. Find it here:

WIT: “Anyone who sits on top of the largest hydrogen-oxygen fueled system in the world, knowing they're going to light the bottom – and doesn't get a little worried – does not fully understand the situation.”  – John Young, after being asked if he was worried about making the first Space Shuttle flight.

WISDOM: “In my own view, the important achievement of Apollo was a demonstration that humanity is not forever chained to this planet, and our visions go rather further than that, and our opportunities are unlimited.”  – Neil Armstrong, press conference, 1999

Senior Citizens need to mark their calendar for the Upper Keys Senior Citizen PR

The new Plantation Key Nursing Center has signed on to have a booth at The Upper Keys Senior Citizen Health and Information Fair on Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 from 11am to 3pm in Key Largo. "Every day we have more groups reserving space to participate in the Senior Fair" says Diana Ross a SHINE volunteer. "We are very excited to be working with HelpLine to help organize this event. If you ever wondered what services are available locally for Seniors, here is your chance to find out and all at one location too" she stated.

"The Senior Citizen Health and Information Fair is free and open to the public" chimes in Civic Club member Fay Ross "and we are putting it on at a great location - The Key Largo Civic Club - MM100 Oceanside which is just across the street from the Lions Club. Our main goal is to bring information to our older residents and the public" she adds.

"It's a good match to have HelpLine, SHINE - Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders, the Department of Elder Affairs and the Alliance for Aging all join forces to present this event" states Pam Martin, chair of the Senior Fair. "The Alliance for Aging funds several of the programs that effect Seniors in the Keys as well as the Department of Elder Affairs. We are usually the information source when Seniors need to find help. We try to end the confusion on who provides what services for senior citizens locally and hope The Senior Fair can help many Key's residents become familiar with providers and have needed information already on hand in case of an emergency." continues Ms. Martin.

"I can't wait until The Senior Fair to see what services I might need later on when I get old" proclaims 93 years young, Marvin Glade who is still working as the receptionist at the Senior Center and also a SHINE volunteer.

Phones for those who are deaf or hearing impaired will be available as well as information on how to get other equipment to help you communicate. If you have one of the older models of these special phones that aren't working... you can make arrangements to exchange it for a new one at the Senior Fair.

July 13,2011 - Florida Keys - Jessica Mintz: Meet Clancy, a true Key West Heming Way kitty. He has 6toes with the exception of his right front paw which has 7 toes. He was rescued from a hoarding situation in 2007 when he was still a kitten. His adopter was offered a position overseas after being unemployed for a couple of years and not able to take Clancy with him. Clancy was born in October 2007, and has medium-length fur. He loves to get brushed and does not mind to have his nails clipped as well. Clancy does not mind the company of other cats and we think he would love the idea to go to a home where he will have another cat to play with. One of favorite things for Clancy to do is to cuddly up on the couch and watch TV. Please, email keysforgottenfelines@live.com for more information.

It's the Cat's Meow!! Forgotten Felines will hold its first ever cat adoption event on Saturday, August 13, from 10-3 at the Purr-Fect Thrift Store located across the Marathon City Park. Get your picture taken with the Cat in the Hat and another surprise character. Enjoy some refreshments as well as a 50/50 raffle and other great raffle prizes. At the same time, you have the opportunity to go for a treasure hunt in our store and check out our sidewalk sale. If you would like to take part of this wonderful event, we are still looking for volunteers to help us for the day. For more information, please email keysforgottenfelines@live.com or call Jessica at 305-240-5266.

We would also like to invite you to our next Forgotten Felines meeting on Monday, July 25. We will start gathering at 6 pm and will start our meeting at 6:30 pm, which will usually last until 8 pm. Refreshments will be served and we will have some raffle prizes as well. Plus, we have a surprise guest speaker. Find out the latest happening in the world of the Florida Keys felines, get to meet cat lovers as well Forgotten Felines supporters and volunteers. Meeting location is at the Martin Luther Chapel in Marathon behind NAPA Auto Parts. Hope to see you there!

All Keys Glass can do about anything encompassing glass. I found the all glass walk-in showers very nice. There is something tropical about a shower like that. There appears to be more open area as well in case you should want to shower with other people. Okay, spouse. Goodness.

July 26, 2011 - Marathon - L. E. Shaffer: Pet Life and Death Choices Depending on Money Can Be Agony. I attended a recent Forgotten Felines meeting where I pitched my idea about a pet catastrophe fund to help people in need pay for vet bills instead of putting their pet down. Involving multiple groups, organizations, and vets presents difficulties. That is why I am looking into starting a private fund named in memory of my Ebony BlackCat who died July 10. I will try to put in as much money as I can, but for this to work I will need others to help with the funding. I will visit nearby vets to see if they would be interested as well.

Jessica Mintz emailed me, "Thanks for coming to the meeting yesterday and to talk about your disaster fund. I think it is a great idea and I wish that every vet in the Florida Keys would participate in it. We have so many vets in the Keys and you would think that one or the other vet would help out pet owners. Dr. Dunn is a wonderful vet and has been Forgotten Felines main vet for many years. Unfortunately, there are not very many veterinarians with a heart for animals and owners like him. I am sorry to hear that Abby is in need of surgery which is expensive. I wonder if Dr. Dunn offers a payment plan. I know that some vets do offer payment plans for repeating patients or people they have known for a while.

"Forgotten Felines received over 10 calls within 1 month from people asking for vet assistance. We can offer free spay/neuter but when it comes to treatments, surgeries, etc. we are not really able to help out as much as we want to. Funds are tough and I have been trying to work on a fund, which will make it possible for Forgotten Felines to help out with vet bills. I have also been trying to find someone with grant-writing experience since it would help a lot to receive grants. But it is tough, most of the time people charge you an arm and length for certain services and just don't care much about animals. We just have to hang in there and continue fighting and supporting the Felines of the Florida Keys :)

"You have mentioned your tent and we would love to have it for our cat adoption event. We already have a tent but I think it would be a good idea to have 2 tents to have shade. I don't care that it has your banner on it, it just shows that the Florida Keys is a big supporter of Forgotten Felines!

"Thank you for the automatic waterer. I will get an email out to our foster homes to see if anyone needs it. I heard that some felines a picky when it comes to "running water", haha.

"I will try to get you something for the column later today or tomorrow. "

July 27, 2011 - Monroe County - Dear Editor, An article from our County Administrator in the KW Citizen “he is optimistic about our future” and has asked that we be optimistic.

Are you optimistic? The devaluation of our property values, sewer assessments, cost of lateral hook ups, gas $4.25 a gallon, property insurance increases, food prices are increasing, national unemployment rates at 10%, in Monroe County 6%, 11 States are on the brink of bankruptcy. Are you optimistic?

Our staff is the best in Monroe County; they are property owners and taxpayers too. This is not about staff; this is about helping residents here in Monroe County be able to live here. The State saw fit to cut 3% in government staff’s retirement fund, yet you are asking the taxpayers here in Monroe County to pick up that cost. Folks these costs are coming out of the same set of pockets, whether it is Federal, State or local.

Some staff members who in the last 14 months have gotten raises in the range of $15,310.42 up to $16,391.31 individually, are now across the board ready for another raise if this 5% increase goes into effect I am talking about increases to the ordinary resident who is trying to keep a roof over their heads, food on their tables, and gas in their cars. These types of increases are not sustainable.

Talked with one of our Commissioners today, they stated if you want something done about this 5% increase, you should write to your Commissioners.

July 29, 2011 - Middle Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Journal Week in Review. While this is supposed to be the Journal Week in Review, I should change that to weeks. A vacation and general laziness has filled up my week-in-review material. So I will be short and to the point, which should make everyone happier.

Monroe County Board of Education and the upper administrative staff are a budget gone awry. John Dick needs help. The last election promised changes, but here we go again with more of the same. Please cut the upper administrative staff by 50% through attrition. Put the money saved into the classroom with students and teachers. Not all of us voters voted for union busting.

Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT]. FDOT is still a four-letter word. They are a slap in the face waiting to happen. Customer service is alien to them. And now they want to pave our part of US1 and treat them like the second coming.

County Chambers of Commerce take a hit in numbers. The business owners that I have talked to wonder what value they get for their $300 membership. You have ex-members saying the same thing. I think the chambers have a PR problem. Change the dynamic and provide some services to non-members who might become members once the value is demonstrated.

What is the balance between talking about the economy still struggling and speaking about businesses in an encouraging way?

Marathon’s animal shelter is back to community-oriented services for us instead of blatantly killing our animals like FKSPCA.

Seafood Festival keeps on giving as Marathon’s Parks and Recreation Department gets $4,500 contribution.

Happy 95th birthday to St. Paul A. M. E. Church bordering 41st and 42nd Streets. This is likely the location of the Rock Coalition’s upcoming candidate forum prior to the November 8th election.

Faro Blanco developers are stirring. The long delayed development just might be coming to life soon. The economy needs this and similar actions as well.

Complaining of our local economic woes and saying no to the possibility of a casino is like biting yourself on the hand repeatedly.

Marathon City Councilmen Mike Cinque and Rich Keating are running again. Bicycle Joanie missed the petition method of qualifying and now needs the $750 to register. Don’t count out Joanie and expect an election in the fall.

Fishermen’s Hospital is under new management, but will parking in the emergency room parking lot still cost you $3,000?

Marathon Garbage Service picks up trash, but being rude to customers is epidemic.

TIB Bank is now Capital Bank. Capital Bank? What kind of name is that for a local bank? What part of TIB Bank being unique and popular to bank members does this new company not understand?

Islamorada City Council makes a more intelligent offer to Key Largo Wastewater Board, but then they give themselves raises. WTFO? One step forward, two steps back is typical council behavior.

Keys Disease by John Bartus still delivers after all these years. John, you are getting old.

Candidates should beware of Marathon & Lower Keys Association of Realtors [MLKAR], as they control very little votes and offer little money. The Rock Coalition offers at least 100 bullet votes and many little checks that add up to more than MLKAR can offer.

Note to candidates, local unions offer rock-solid votes to ensure winning. Ignore them at your peril.

Sombrero Country Club, how low will the membership fee go before they get out of the red?

Cutting pay, hours, or laying off public service workers takes money out of our economy. Every dollar saved takes ten dollars out of the local economy. Every dollar spent on public service workers puts ten dollars into the economy. You do the math.

Brian Howard is charged with sexual assault and battery, but is still innocent until proven guilty. Or don’t you believe in the constitution? O, Michael Mearns is innocent until proven guilty too. The circumstances of his case are quite weak. Let us stop convicting people before their day in court. Newspapers have a responsibility to report this, but an equal and more important responsibility to preserve people’s innocence until proven guilty.

A cut in the Guidance Clinic’s budget of $60,000 will cost our property taxpayers nearly $300,000. Mental Healthcare and regular medical services are the same and should be funded the same. Anything cutting safety, health, or environment is a wrong-headed choice of convenience not careful thought.

Marathon puts the burden of the budget on the backs of city staff. Having city staff pay for retirement services that they earned takes money out of the economy and ends up costing property taxpayers tenfold. I recommend city staff unionize. That would be good for Marathon, staff, and property taxpayers. Actually, a small 1 to 2% raise would stimulate the local economy. Finally, let us stop raping the reserve funds. We are one hurricane away from disaster and death.

There are skeeters, skeeters everywhere and taxpayers feeling dollars stolen from their wallets.

I want to go go-carting myself badly, but I need an excuse to invite some member of my unsuspecting family to come with me.
